Refractory Manufacturers and Suppliers: Producers, Distributors and How to Buy

Refractory manufacturers and suppliers form five tiers, from grain and binder producers through refractory producers and distributors to lining contractors, and the Product Directory of The Refractories Institute (TRI) lists more than 5,000 brand name products. With that many products, how does a buyer name the one that fits a lining zone? A buyer names it by family, by classification standard and class, by customs code and by the documents the quotation must carry. Every one of these products is a form of refractory materials, shaped, monolithic or insulating.

The page walks the supply side in that order. Five tiers separate producers from distributors, four customs headings (6902, 6903, 3816 and the non-refractory 6901 to avoid) map products to codes, and ASTM and ISO classes name the product. A bagged calcium aluminate cement can delay its setting exotherm by more than 20 h after 6 weeks at 20 °C (68 °F). Direct material plus installation is 40 to 60 % of total refractory-related cost in one steel plant report, and heating 1 t of liquid steel by 1 °C costs 4 to 10 eurocents (3.6 to 9.1 eurocents per short ton).

Every value names its standard and edition, the product data sheet or the dated source it comes from; see our methodology and fact-checking process.

What Do Refractory Manufacturers and Suppliers Supply?#

Refractory manufacturers and suppliers deliver non-metallic products for high-temperature use (ISO 836:2001 term 107; above 538 °C or 1,000 °F in ASTM C71-12(2024)) plus the grains, binders and additives they are made from. The steel industry is the largest buyer: "around 70 % of refractories are sold to the steel industry" (World Refractories Association, read 2026-10-27). A producer's own revenue split by segment is therefore not the market split.

Five Supplier Tiers From Grain Producers to Contractors#

Five tiers supply a refractory lining: raw material producers, additive and binder producers, refractory producers, distributors and stockists, and contractors.

Tier What it supplies Buyer
Raw material producers refractory-grade grains (alumina, bauxite, magnesia, chamotte, SiC, zircon) refractory producers
Additive and binder producers calcium aluminate cement, microsilica, dispersants, antioxidants, fibers, phosphate binders refractory producers, formulators
Refractory producers bricks and shapes, monolithics, insulation, flow control plants, contractors, distributors
Distributors and stockists stock of common classes, cutting, precast shapes, small installations maintenance teams, small plants
Contractors installation, dry-out, inspection, tear-out and recycling plant owners

Trade bodies exist by region: TRI in the US, PRE in Europe and IRMA in India. A buyer's quality check starts at delivery, since some steel plants run QC tests on deliveries (Tata Steel IJmuiden, refractories WORLDFORUM 9, 2017).

Producers Versus Distributors and Stockists#

A producer makes refractories to a class and issues the data sheet; a distributor or stockist sells from local stock and may add cutting, precast shapes or small installation jobs. Quantities are quoted in metric tonnes, and a US short ton is 907.2 kg, so 1 t is 1.102 short tons.

The one practical difference for the buyer is who signs the test certificate, which the documents section below sets out.

Refractory Products by Family and HS Code#

Refractory products fall into five families that buyers order, and the customs code of a finished product follows its form and main oxide.

Family What suppliers sell HS heading Classification standards
refractory bricks fired, chemically bonded, carbon-bonded and fused-cast shapes; flow control parts 6902; 6903 for nozzles, plugs, tubes ASTM C27, C416, C455, C1547; ISO 10081-1 to -4
monolithic refractories castables, plastics, ramming and gunning mixes, mortars 3816 ASTM C401; ISO 1927-1
refractory insulation insulating firebrick, fiber, boards 6902 for insulating brick; other forms n/a ASTM C155; ISO 2245
refractory raw materials grains and aggregates by size and chemistry n/a supplier specification
refractory additives and binders cements, binders, dispersants, antioxidants, fibers n/a EN 14647 for CAC of 35 to 58 % Al2O3

HS headings after the US HTS (checked 2026-10-27); the six-digit structure is international. Insulating fiber, grains and additives fall under headings outside chapter 69 and 3816.

Heading 6902 covers refractory bricks, blocks and tiles: 6902.10 holds more than 50 % MgO, CaO or Cr2O3 (singly or together), 6902.20 more than 50 % alumina, silica or a mixture, and 6902.90 the rest. Heading 6903 covers other refractory ceramic goods such as nozzles, plugs, tubes and crucibles, with 6903.10 above 50 % free carbon and 6903.20 above 50 % alumina or alumina-silica.

Heading 3816 covers refractory cements, mortars, concretes and similar compositions, including dolomite ramming mix (US 3816.00.10 and 3816.00.20). Heading 6901 is siliceous fossil meal brick and is never a refractory code here.

Refractory Manufacturers List: Neutral Examples by Segment#

No single list ranks every refractory manufacturer, so the table below lists producers alphabetically by segment, with each figure attributed to the company's own report, and leaves revenue rankings to market analysts.

Alphabetical order; a listing is not an endorsement and no company pays for placement.

The revenue figures are company statements for different years and currencies, so they are not comparable across rows. India has more than 150 producers, about 15 to 16 of them major (CARE Ratings, July 2020), and its trade body IRMA counts more than 65 manufacturing members plus 20 associate members. The guide to refractories in India covers the Indian producers and standards.

Refractory Companies in the USA#

Refractory companies active in the US market and named in the sources include Allied Mineral Products, HarbisonWalker International (HWI), Minteq, Plibrico and Resco, listed alphabetically and without ranking.

The TRI Product Directory is the US industry index of brand name products. Ownership changes alter the names on data sheets: Resco Group (US) became part of RHI Magnesita on 28 January 2025 at an enterprise value of USD 410 million, and Platinum Equity announced on 14 December 2022 that HWI would combine with Calderys, which became a standalone company under Platinum Equity on 2 February 2023.

How to Specify a Refractory Product Before Asking for Quotes#

A refractory specification names the product family, the standard and class, the chemistry target with its basis, the maximum service or classification temperature and the key properties, so that every supplier quotes the same product. The key properties are bulk density, apparent porosity, cold crushing strength, hot modulus of rupture and permanent linear change.

A class threshold is a standard requirement; a data-sheet number is the typical value of one named product; a quote compares like with like only when both are labeled. The full designation list sits under refractory standards.

Classification Standards to Name: ASTM and ISO Side by Side#

An RFQ names one classification document per family, and the US and ISO documents for one family sit side by side without being equivalent.

Family US standard (edition) ISO or EN standard (edition) What the RFQ names
fireclay and high-alumina brick ASTM C27 classification, C27-98(2022) ISO 10081 classification, ISO 10081-1:2003 (EN ISO 10081-1:2005) fireclay duty class; high-alumina Al2O3 content
silica brick ASTM C416-97(2022) ISO 10081-1:2003 standard and producer grade
basic brick below 7 % residual carbon ASTM C455-07(2022) ISO 10081-2:2003 (EN ISO 10081-2:2005) type M, MSp, MCr, D and MgO class
basic brick 7 to below 50 % residual carbon ASTM C831-18(2023) (residual carbon test) ISO 10081-3:2003 (EN ISO 10081-3:2005) type MC, MDC, DC with MgO and carbon band
fusion-cast blocks ASTM C1547-02(2022) ISO 10081-4:2014 (EN ISO 10081-4:2014) group, for example AZS30/40
castables ASTM C401 classification of castables, C401-12(2022) ISO 1927 classification of monolithics, ISO 1927-1:2012 (EN ISO 1927-1:2012) class A to G or N to V; type, chemical type, classification temperature
insulating firebrick ASTM C155 classification of insulating firebrick, C155-97(2022) ISO 2245:2006 group number
calcium aluminate cement n/a EN 14647:2005 + AC:2006 35 to 58 % Al2O3 grades only
installation quality API 936 refractory installation quality control, API Std 936, 5th ed. March 2024; API Std 975, 2nd ed. April 2025; API Std 976, 2nd ed. October 2024 n/a preshipment testing and compliance datasheet

Same family, different documents; no row declares two standards equivalent.

ASTM C401-12(2022) treats a castable as dense above 1.68 g/cm³ (105 lb/ft³) dried bulk density and sets classes A to G by permanent linear change of at most 1.5 % after 5 h at the class temperature, from A 1095 °C (2,000 °F) to G 1760 °C (3,200 °F), °C as printed in the standard. ISO 1927-1:2012 designates monolithics by type, chemical type, main raw material and classification temperature.

An ASTM C155-97(2022) group number times 100 approximates the reheat test temperature in °F, not a service temperature. ISO 2245:2006 groups 80 to 180 stand for 800 to 1800 °C (1,472 to 3,272 °F).

Data Sheets, Test Certificates and Preshipment Testing#

A supplier quotation carries three documents: the technical data sheet with typical values, the safety data sheet, and a test certificate or preshipment test result for the delivered material.

API Std 936 (5th edition, March 2024) sets owner, contractor, inspector and manufacturer duties for monolithic linings, with preshipment testing, as-installed sampling and a compliance datasheet. API Std 975 (2nd edition, April 2025) covers brick systems and API Std 976 (2nd edition, October 2024) fiber linings.

Test editions matter. EN ISO 10059-1:2025 (cold crushing strength) and EN ISO 5014:2025 (modulus of rupture) replaced their EN 993 parts on 2025-12-09, while ASTM values come from C133-24 and C20-00(2022). A data sheet citing a replaced part is an older test basis, not a different property. Reading each value is covered under properties of refractory materials.

Batch Records, Date of Manufacture and Additive Identity#

Traceability in a refractory RFQ rests on the date of manufacture, the test certificate of the delivered material and, for additives, the substance identity by CAS number.

The RFQ lists test certificates, preshipment testing, third-party inspection and country of origin. For additives it adds grade, CAS number, d50, BET surface, packaging, date of manufacture, SDS and REACH status.

Three identity traps recur in additive RFQs. Calcium aluminate cement is CAS 65997-16-2 (EC 266-045-5), never 12042-68-1, which is the CA phase. Microsilica is CAS 69012-64-2 (EC 273-761-1), never 7631-86-9, which is colloidal and fumed silica. Alumina grains are CAS 1344-28-1 (EC 215-691-6), never aluminum trihydrate 21645-51-2.

Packaging, Storage and Shelf Life of Cement-Bonded Products#

Cement-bonded refractories age in the bag, and 6 weeks in paper bags at 20 °C (68 °F) delayed the setting exotherm of a 68 % CAC castable by more than 20 h.

The delay was under 8 h with Secar XA, in a bauxite low-cement castable (UNITECR 2025 conference paper). Aging is why the date of manufacture belongs on the RFQ. Hydratable alumina binder is more hygroscopic than calcium aluminate cement (producer statements), which shortens the usable window further.

Product Stated shelf or storage life Label and basis
ISTRA 40 calcium aluminate cement about 6 months typical product value, Calucem data sheet (May 2024)
Almatis CA-14 and CA-270 calcium aluminate cements 24 months typical product value, Almatis data sheet
hydratable alumina binder 6 months unopened; 12 months with new packaging producer statements (Alcoa 1996; Almatis aging study)
Plibrico plastic refractories clay and air-bonded up to 12 months; phosphate-bonded 3 to 6 months typical product values, Plibrico installation guide

Shelf lives of bagged products; the values are typical values of named products, not class rules.

Order quantities to the stated shelf life of the product, because a bag older than its stated life is an older material than the data sheet describes. The binder that ages in the bag is covered under calcium aluminate cement for refractories.

How to Compare Refractory Suppliers and Quotes#

Refractory suppliers are compared on total cost of ownership, campaign life and furnace uptime rather than purchase price alone, a criterion RHI Magnesita reports for its larger integrated steel customers in India (H1 2026 results). Three questions follow: which route buys the product, what the lining costs over its life, and which factors move the quote.

Buying Routes: Spot Orders, Tenders, Consignment and Full-Line Service#

Refractories are bought through five routes: spot RFQ against a data sheet, public or corporate tender, consignment stock, full-line service priced per tonne of product, and performance-based contracts.

Route What the supplier delivers Trade-off Example in the sources
spot RFQ product against a data sheet price from production cost, overhead, margin and transport transactional supply (Tata Steel IJmuiden, 2017)
public or corporate tender product or repair job under fixed terms delivery period, bid validity and deposit fields SAIL Durgapur Steel Plant refractory repair tender, issued 22 Oct 2026, delivery period 365 days, bid validity 120 days
consignment stock stock held at the plant, paid on use stock risk and cost move to the supplier and into the price steel industry practice (Tata Steel IJmuiden, 2017)
full-line service, per tonne of product supply, logistics, stock keeping, installation, wrecking and waste removal removes hidden cost and falls with output; the buyer loses cost knowledge and cannot check prices RHI Magnesita India full-line contracts (EAF, ladle, slide gate, purging, tundish); Puyang Refractories overall contracts
performance-based contract lining performance targets pays for campaign life and uptime RHI Magnesita 4PRO

Buying routes and their trade-offs.

Payment terms of several months are more or less standard in steel; on a refractory spend of EUR 25 m per year, paying one week later saves EUR 25,000 to 55,000 interest per year (Tata Steel IJmuiden, 2017). Route and payment terms therefore enter the comparison next to the unit price, because a longer payment term and consignment stock move cost between buyer and supplier without changing the data sheet.

When installation is in the scope, a quote splits into pre-job, tear-out and waste, shell and anchors, installation, curing, dry-out and heat-up, inspection and closeout, and no public price list exists for installation or dry-out (searched 2026-10-27). The scope behind a full-service quote is set out under refractory practice.

Total Cost of Ownership Versus Purchase Price#

Direct material plus installation may be only 40 to 60 % of total refractory-related cost, and no more than 20 to 35 % of value in use with process effects (Tata Steel IJmuiden, refractories WORLDFORUM 9, 2017).

Heating 1 t of liquid steel by 1 °C costs 4 to 10 eurocents (3.6 to 9.1 eurocents per short ton), so a lining that holds temperature has a cost beyond its own price. In most cases more than 50 % of installed refractory ends as waste at wrecking, which adds tear-out and disposal to the lining's cost.

Refractories are around 2 to 3 % of steelmaking operating cost and 0.2 to 1.5 % of an industrial facility's life-cycle cost, with replacement cycles of 1 to 20 years (company statement, FY2024 results, 27 Feb 2025). The share differs by plant, as shown under refractories by industry.

Quote Factors, Price Indices and Trade Remedies#

Eight factors move a refractory quote, listed below.

  • class and grade
  • raw-material origin
  • shape complexity
  • quantity
  • packaging
  • freight
  • trade-remedy duties
  • installation and dry-out

No list price is printed here. The US BLS producer price index for clay refractories (WPU1352, 1982 = 100) stood at 405.818 in September 2026, a trend, not a price. One producer reports group average pricing about 6 % lower in 2024 than in 2023 (FY2024 results, 27 Feb 2025).

US antidumping orders on certain magnesia-carbon bricks from China and Mexico (20 September 2010) and a countervailing order on China (21 September 2010) were continued effective 12 February 2016 and 19 August 2021, and third five-year reviews were instituted on 1 July 2026 (Federal Register Vol. 91 No. 126, 2 July 2026). Origin is therefore a price factor.

Refractory Supply by Region: Market Figures and Country Guides#

Refractory supply is global but regional in price and lead time, and market figures exist only as analyst estimates: for 2025 they range from USD 38 to 48 billion (Mordor Intelligence and Fortune Business Insights, as quoted in RHI Magnesita India's Annual Report 2025-26). Segments, regions and producer revenues are set out under refractories market size and leading producers.

The spread between the two estimates reflects differences in scope and in value versus volume basis; this is an inference from the differing definitions, not a published reconciliation.

Where Can Refractory Bricks Be Bought?#

Industrial refractory bricks are bought from producers by class and standard, or from distributors and stockists that hold common classes in local stock. A purchase order names the class and edition from the standards table and the customs heading 6902 or 6903, so the seller can match stock to the specification.

Who Carries Refractory Cement and Castables?#

Distributors and stockists carry refractory cements, castables and mortars in bags next to brick, and producers sell them by class under customs heading 3816. The trade term itself, and where it applies to concrete, is explained under refractory cement.
